The Volvo FL cab is carefully designed ensure that you can focus on driving. The seats are highly adjustable, the overview is excellent and the instrument panel is clear and easy to understand.

Options such as foldaway bunks, air conditioning, storage spaces, roof hatches and a variety of fabrics and decor mouldings make it a very comfortable workplace.

Crashworthy cabs
The most common accident scenarios include a full frontal collision or a roll-over accident. When the cab is struck by an exterior object, its primary task is to transfer energy backwards in order to maintain sufficient survival space inside.

At Volvo Trucks we test our cabs thoroughly in a series of sequences, including the front pendulum test. And all cabs meet Swedish cab strength standards – the toughest in the world.

Absorbing the energy of the impact
There are tremendous forces at work in case of an accident. The power exposed to your body is likely to be at least twice the weight of your entire body. A person weighing 100 kg is exposed to a force equal to four tonnes when travelling at 50 km/h. That is why the cab interior needs to be energy-absorbent, in order to yield to the impact of the human body.

Air suspension
The Volvo ECS (Electronically Controlled Suspension) gives you high comfort and protects your cargo. The system automatically adjusts itself so that the truck remains at a constant height and compensates for unevenly distributed loads.

The manual height control makes it easier to adjust the load platform's height to match that of the cargo bay. The system can even be programmed with a number of alternative loading bay heights.

Leaf springs
Leaf springs of parabolic type provide an excellent ride without bumps even under low axle loads. The suspension is soft and suitable for most transports and road types. With low weight and long service life, leaf springs are an economical alternative.

Brakes
•Ventilated discs front and rear
•EBS Electronically controlled air brake system
•Standard exhaust brake
•Optional exhaust brake with compression brake
•Hill hold option

Electronically controlled Volvo brakes you can rely on
The Volvo FL has electronically controlled air brakes as standard EBS - offering excellent braking performance in all weather and road conditions. Resulting in shorter stopping distances and better control than a conventional system with air brakes and EBS. The standard system can be further supplemented with the EBS medium package that includes traction control and a hill hold function, where by the simple press of a button during a hill start the service brakes are applied and not released until the engine has sufficient torque to pull away. Giving the driver extra reassurance during his normal hill start routine that whatever happens the vehicle will pull away with out the need for excess strain on the driveline.

To reduce stress and enhance the life of the disc brakes, the Volvo FL has an exhaust brake supplied as standard. There is also the option of a powerful compression brake, giving a maximum of 188kW of retardation.

Chassis packaging
Choose between standard, road-sweeper or crew-cab packages. The Volvo FL can be specified with ready-made chassis, tailored for various applications. The solutions are specially designed for your operating area but are nonetheless flexible – the truck can easily be modified, for example the relocation of the fuel tank or batteries.

A true friend in town
The unbeatably rapid response and the powerful torque from low revs make this engine ideal for various forms of distribution operation, especially in the urban environment.

With common-rail technology and electronic engine management the Volvo D7F has an immensely precise fuel injection resulting in an extremely efficient combustion.

Thanks to after-treatment of the exhaust gases with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, the engine meets the Euro 5 norms.

Gearbox
Manual
The Volvo FL is available with two manual gearboxes, one with 6 gears and the other with 9. The gearboxes are servo-assisted and easy to operate, with a short gear lever. The lever is vibration-free and has a short throw and a very well-defined shift pattern.

I-Sync
I-Sync – Volvo’s smooth, intelligent transmission featuring automatic shifting – makes distribution operations even more
comfortable. You can devote your attention to driving safely, concentrating fully on the intensive pace of the city’s traffic.

Automatic
You can smoothly and conveniently operate the automatic 6-speed transmission with push-buttons on the instrument panel. The AL306 is easy to operate and saves fuel since the engine always operates within its optimum rev range. And when starting off the hydraulic torque converter provides considerable pulling power.

The automatic transmission can be specified with all engine variants for the Volvo FL.

Rear axle

Single reduction
In the single-reduction rear axle, power is transmitted from the propeller shaft to the driven wheels in one single stage. This type of rear axle is lightweight and has very small internal power losses, which in turn helps minimise fuel consumption.

Hub reduction
Demanding conditions and heavy loads are part of everyday life for many Volvo truck drivers. With a Volvo FL equipped with a rear axle featuring a hub reduction you bring extra power to your truck. The ratio reduction takes place in two steps, so the burden on the driveshafts and final drive is lower. This promotes good operating reliability even at high power outputs and high speeds.

Driveline safety
Powerful auxiliary brakes
Integrated control of the wheel brakes and auxiliary brakes – exhaust brake, engine brake and retarder – boosts both safety and productivity. And functions such as Brake Blending deploy the correct braking system in each and every case.

Environmental driveline
Guiding you to optimised fuel consumption
Reducing fuel consumption is a must when it comes to economy of a company. But even more so when it comes to environmental issues. At Volvo we believe in the benefits of cleaner technology. It is a mission we take seriously. Just to give you one example: between 1980 and 2001, through improved engine efficiency, the normal fuel consumption, using diesel engines, has decreased by about 30%.

However, besides vehicle and engine design the fuel consumption for goods vehicle transport is dependent on a number of factors, such as load factor, the driver, the equipment and weather conditions.

SCR technology
At Volvo Trucks we believe that Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is the best alternative for complying with the Euro 5 emission legislation. SCR is a well-proven and reliable technology without limitations in horsepower output and it has been in use in Europe since 2004. SCR also represents the most fuel-efficient solution among the techniques available for Euro 5.The solution uses less fuel, offer higher hp and the cooling or oil systems are not affected.

For rigids with 4x2 drive, there is the option of ESP (Electronic Stability Program) – an advanced stability enhancement system that reduces the risk of rolling over, skidding and jack-knifing.

Chassis packaging
The Volvo FE can be specified with ready-made chassis, tailored for various applications. The solutions are specially designed for your operating area but are nonetheless flexible – the truck can easily be modified, for instance, by relocation of the fuel tank or batteries.

This means that it can also be easily be modified for its second life.

Chassis safety
EBS electronically controlled fast brakes
EBS (Electronically controlled Brake System) disc brakes offer distinct and well-balanced brake feel combined with heat-resistant disc installation and simple service. They are characterised by high braking effect, while electronic control results in immensely swift response with a short stopping distance. EBS is available in Standard, Medium and High program packages. EBS Standard is standard on the European market.

ESP brake stabilisation forgives the driver
The ESP (Electronic Stability Program) stabilisation system promotes safe and secure braking with the possibility of redistributing braking force between the various wheels as necessary.

Using the truck over and over again
About 95% of a Volvo truck is recyclable. And about one third of our trucks are already made from recycled materials (33% of the weight). All plastic components weighing more than 50 grams are labelled for easy identification. Dismantling handbooks are available for most models and to top it off we sign agreements with local partners to ensure that as little of a Volvo truck as possible goes to waste.

The optional new static cornering lights give the driver far bette rclose up visibility by lighting up the vehicles intended path at junctions when the indicator is switched on.

Crashworth cabs

The most common truck accident scenartio sresulting in severe driver injury are a full frontal collision or a roll-over. When the cab is struck by an esterior object, its primary task is to transger energy abckwards in order to maintain sufficient survival space inside.

At Volvo Trucks we test all our cabs to the toughest legal demands and beyond, including our own front barrier test. All our cabs meeting Swedish cab strength standards - the toughest in the world.

In all our cabs the steering wheel and the dashboard are energy-absorbent, as are the trims at knee height and all of the upholstery fabrics are made of flameproof materials.

In addition, interior accessories such as the refrigerator and coffee maker are designed to be firmly attached to the cab structure. This ensures that they stay in place in case of collision or emergency braking manoeuvres.

Air Suspension
The Volvo Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) gives you high comfort and protects your cargo. The system automatically adjusts itself so that the truck remains at a constant height and compensates for unevenly distributed loads.
The manual height control makes cargo handling easier. Swapping demountable load platforms is faster and you can easily adjust the truck’s platform height to match the height of the loading bay..

For the highest gross weights The three-axle Tridem bogie with air suspension featuring a steered tag axle is intended for construction trucks. Tridem is characterised by high stability and good get-you-there ability even in difficult conditions. A steered tag axle combined with a short wheelbase means the truck is also very easy to manoeuvre, with a tight turning circle.

Leaf springs
The Volvo FM can be specified with leaf springs of parabolic or conventional type. Conventional leaf springs are sometimes used on construction trucks, for good stability and when high axle weights can be expected. Parabolic leaf springs are mostly used in front axle suspensions and they can be combined with air, parabolic or conventional rear suspension.

Brakes
•Electronically controlled Brake System (EBS)
•Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
•Z-cam brakes
•Auxiliary brakes, such as Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+)

More effect when braking
The braking system includes EBS disc brakes with ESP as an option, or alternatively the tried and tested Z-cam brakes.
These alternatives can be supplemented with particularly effective auxiliary brakes, such as Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+) and a retarder.
EBS is a disc-brake system that electronically controls the braking effect. There are many advantages to having disc brakes with electronic control via the truck's own electrical system.
Drum brakes of Z-cam type are used primarily on trucks with leaf spring suspension.
•Compact retarder – integrated with I-Shift and manual gearboxes, provides continuous availability of braking power, even during gearchanging. Total braking effect with retarder depends on engine model and equipment, such as EPG/VEB/ VEB+
•Primary retarder – integrated in Powertronic and provides continuous access to high braking power, even during gearchanging. Total braking effect with retarder depends on engine model and equipment, such as EPG/VEB/VEB+
Volvo Engine Brake

The patented Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+) produces higher braking effect compared with its predecessors. There is also the EPG exhaust brake for the D11C and D13C.

In the Volvo FM, the focus is on payload. One of the goals of Volvo’s chassis development is to
minimise component weight so that a greater proportion of the vehicle’s total weight can be utilised
for carrying the cargo.

The Volvo FM is available with a wide range of configurations, wheelbases and suspension options. This versatile base means there is a chassis solution for every transport application. With five chassis heights – from X-Low at 810 mm to High at 1200 mm – you have considerable scope for tailoring the optimal model for your operational needs. The chassis layout is modular in construction and the tractor and rigid chassis utilise the same component base.
There are five different chassis heights for tractors:

•X-Low - nominal 810mm
•Low - nominal 850mm
•Medium - nominal 900mm
•Standard = nominal 900mm
•High - nominal 1200mm
And four heights for rigids:

•Low - nominal 850mm
•Medium - nominal 900mm
•Standard - nominal 1000mm
•High - nominal 1200mm
Subject to the size of tyre specified.

Lane Changing Support

Lane Changing Support (LCS) keeps an eye on the blind spot on the passenger side that the rearview mirrors cannot cover. When the driver operates the indicator to change lanes, the LCS system’s radar unit first checks whether there is a vehicle in the blind spot. If there is, the driver is alerted via a light signal, if the speed >30km/h and the 'target' vehicle relative speed is -14 to +21km/h

Adaptive cruise control maintains a steady distance
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) option is a system that makes it easy to blend into traffic and keep a constant safe distance/time gap behind the vehicle in front. The radar-based ACC system works via automatic operation of the accelerator and brakes. The radar sensor is entirely new and has improved detection capabilities.
Electronically controlled fast brakes

Volvo’s Electronically controlled Brake System (EBS) is characterised by high braking effect allied to heat-resistant disc installation. Electronic control permits extremely fast response and a short braking distance. EBS is available in the Medium and High program packages.

ESP brakes each wheel individually

Electronic Stability Program is included in EBS High for all 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 disc braked tractors with air suspension and is now also available on 6×2 air suspended tag axle rigids. The system permits more uniform braking with the possibility of redistribution of braking forces between the axles and wheels to prevent over or understeer, as well as a degree of roll over protection.

The I-Shift is no conventional gearbox. It is a 12-speed automated gearbox applicable to distribution, logn haul or heavy duty operations. Dimensioned to handle gross combination weights above 80 tonnes. It is quiet and more compact than ever, weighing approximately 70 kg less than a manual gearbox.

New I-Shift with further developed software
TA refinement of our highly appreciated gearbox, I-shift has now been upgraded to match the increased performance of the new engine range... The gearchanging programs are tailored to the specific conditions of each operation. Enhanced I-Roll offers further fuel savings.

Manual

To suit a variety of needs the Volvo FM can be fitted with several 9 or 14-speed manual gearboxes. All feature servo synchromesh and cable operation, which results in low gearchanging force and reduced lever vibration. The range-change and splitter gearboxes are available in versions intended for different engine torque levels and optionally with overdrive as well.
Powertronic

Powertronic, the fully automatic 6-speed planetary transmission is intended for construction and distribution duties. With good starting and driving properties it has two operating modes – Ecomony and Performance, as well as manual gearchanging. The gearchange is smooth and without any disruption in power delivery. The built-in torque converter boosts torque and guarantees smooth and secure starts even in difficult conditions.

In the new Powertronic, the control system and gearchange programs have been further refined, at the same time as the transmission benefits from longer oil-change intervals.

Rear axle
Volvo’s rear axles are designed for tough conditions. There are axles that can transfer engine torque of
up to 3100 Nm and can haul gross combination weights way in excess of 100 tonnes. So irrespective of the transport assignment, you can be sure that they are up to the job.

Getting the power down – whatever the job
The Volvo FM is available with solo and tandem axles with single reduction or hub reduction. All the rear axles have the rear axle casing cast in nodular iron which results in a compact design offering high ground clearance. The wheel bearings are maintenance free.

All rear axles are equipped with differential lock whilst tandem axles also have a differential lock between the axles.

The optional new static cornering lights give the driver far better close up visibility by lighting up the vehicles intended path at junctions when the indicator is switched on.

Crashworthy cabs

The most common truck accident scenario resulting in severe driver injury are a full frontal collision or a roll-over. When the cab is struck by an exterior object, its primary task is to transfer energy backwards in order to maintain sufficient survival space inside.

At Volvo Trucks we test all our cabs to the toughest legal demands and beyond, including our own front barrier test. All our cabs meeting Swedish cab strength standards - the toughest in the world.

Air suspension
Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) gives you high comfort and protects your cargo. The system automatically adjusts itself so that the truck remains at a constant height and compensates for unevenly distributed loads.
The manual height control makes it easier to adjust the load platform's height to match that of the cargo bay. The system can even be programmed with a number of alternative loading bay heights.
Leaf springs
The Volvo FH can be specified with leaf springs of parabolic or conventional type.

EBS is a disc-brake system that electronically controls braking effect.

There is also the EPG exhaust brake for the D13C.

The Volvo FH can be made to suit the most varying transport tasks with chassis available in different heights, types of suspension system, braking system and peripheral equipment.

There are four different chassis heights for tractors:

•X-Low - nominal 810mm
•Low - nominal 850mm
•Medium - nominal 900mm
•Standard = nominal 1000mm
And three heights for rigids:

•Low - nominal 850mm
•Medium - nominal 900mm
•Standard - nominal 1000mm
Subject to the size of tyre specified.

Stay in the right lane

Lane keeping support LKS option monitors the truck’s
position on the road and reduces the risk of accidentally driving off the road. The main application area is in longhaul operations on motorways when the truck is driving at a steady speed in monotonous environments. The LKS video system comes to the driver’s aid when he shows signs of distraction, tiredness or lack of concentration.

Lane changing support

The Lane Changing Support (LCS) – keeps an eye on the blind spot on the passenger side that the rear view mirrors cannot cover. When the driver operates the indicator to change lanes, the LCS system’s radar unit first checks whether there is a vehicle in the blind spot. If there is, the driver is alerted via a light signal.

Driver alert support

Driver alert support DAS option monitors parameters such as steering wheel and pedal movements. A video camera on the inside of the windscreen reads off the road’s centre and edge markings and an on-board computer compares the driver’s steering wheel movements with the road markings. As the driver starts to tire, the system detects changes in driver control via the steering pattern and DAS alerts the driver both via an acoustic signal and by flashing an indication in the driver information display. This option is only available with LKS.
Adaptive cruise control that maintains a steady distance

Adaptive Cruise Control ACC option is an active cruise control system that makes it easy to blend into the traffic flow and keep a constant safe distance behind the vehicle in front. The radar-based ACC maintains a constant distance between the vehicle in front through automatic operation of the accelerator and brakes. The radar sensor is entirely new and has improved detection capabilities.

Electronically controlled fast brakes

Volvo’s EBS electronically controlled disc brakes are characterised by high braking effect combined with heat-resistant disc installation. Electronic control provides an extremely fast response and short braking distance. The EBS brake system is enhanced with the standard Medium package that includes the "Hill Hold” function and the optional High package that features an electronic stability program ESP.

Brake stabilisation forgives the driver

The Electronic Stability Program is included in EBS High for all disc braked tractors and is now available on 6×2 tag axle air suspended rigids. The system permits more uniform braking with the possibility of redistribution of braking forces between the axles and wheels when required in severe conditions, it also provides roll over protection.

Engine
Volvo D13C

•D13C: 420, 460, 500 or 540 hp

•With SCR the engine meets Euro 5/EEV norms
•Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+) as option
•Can be fitted with 1000 Nm engine driven power take-off
•High torque within a wide engine speed range

More power with lower fuel consumption
The D13C offers higher power and more torque – and the results can be seen in terms of improved driveability. What is more, the new engine meets a higher emission standard with improved fuel efficiency. The new driveline – D13C in combination with the I-Shift transmission – has the potential to cut fuel consumption by 3% compared with its predecessor.

The D13C engine is a 12.8 litre, straight, 6-cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler. The engine is available with a choice of power outputs, 420, 460, 500 and 540 hp.

With SCR engines meet Euro 5 norms. In addition, the engine is also available in an EEV (Enhanced Environmental friendly Vehicles) version producing 420, 460 and 500 hp, with even lower emissions of smoke and particulates.

Gearbox
I-Shift to match long hauler
A durable long-haul truck like the Volvo FH requires a transmission to suit. One that is convenient for the driver and fuel efficient on fast long distance runs. The I-Shift automated gearbox provides a previously unattainable level of driveability even at 80 tonnes transportations and beyond.

New I-Shift with further developed software
A refinement of our highly appreciated gearbox, I-shift has now been upgraded to match the increased performance of the new engine range... The gearchanging programs are tailored to the specific conditions of each operation. Enhanced I-Roll offers further fuel savings.

Manual gearboxes

Volvo’s manual gearboxes are available in a 14-speed splitter and ### 9-speed ### range-change version. As the gearboxes have cable operation they are convenient to operate and benefit from low levels of noise and vibration.

In the new Powertronic, the control system and gearchange programs have been further refined, at the same time as the transmission benefits from considerably longer oil-change intervals.

Rear axle
The task of the rear axle is to transfer drive to the road surface as efficiently and with as little drive loss as possible. Low frictional losses and well-matched fast rear axle ratios are the main factors that benefit fuel consumption.

Volvo’s rear axles have been built to handle the rough stuff. They are made of sturdily dimensioned components to deal with the extreme loads and stresses to which a rear axle is subjected. There are variants that can transfer engine torque of up to 3100 Nm and can haul gross combination weights up to 150 tonnes.

The rear axle range is wide – it encompasses solo and tandem axles, with single or hub reduction. All the rear axles have a differential lock. Tandem axles also have an inter axle differential lock.
Delivering power – reducing losses
The Volvo FH is available with a wide range of rear axles characterised by low internal losses and high reliability. Rear axles with single reduction minimise losses and are primarily intended for long haul transportation on good roads. Rear axles with hub reduction are dimensioned for high torque and are primarily intended for construction operations and more demanding haulage with high gross combination weights.

Rear Axle - brief facts:

•Low frictional losses
•Cast rear-axle casings
•Maintenance-free wheel bearings
•Differential lock as standard
•Large selection of ratios

Powerful auxiliary brakes

Integrated control of the wheel brakes and auxiliary brakes – exhaust brake (EPG), Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+) and retarder – boosts both safety and productivity. The powerful auxiliary brakes make it possible to increase average speed in hilly terrain without jeopardising traffic safety. And functions such as Brake Blending deploy the correct braking system in each and every case.

Most of the models in the Volvo FH range are equopped with either rear or full Electronically Controlled Air Suspension (ECS), giving you high comfort and protecting your cargo. The system automatically adjusts itself so that the truck remains at a constant ride height and ensures a road and load-friendly ride.

The Volvo FM can be fitted with leaf springs of parabolic or conventional type. Conventional leaf springs are used on constructionor heavy haulage trucks, for good stability and when high axle weights can be expected.

Brakes
•Electronically controlled Brake System (EBS)
•Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
•Z-cam brakes
•Auxiliary brakes, such as Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+)

Increase average speed with VEB+
With Volvo’s patented VEB+ you get high and uniform braking power without any fading. Since VEB+ covers the engine’s entire rev range, you can handle most of the truck’s braking needs with the engine brake.

VEB+ delivers extremely high braking effect – 425 kW with the D16G. When driving in hilly landscape you have good potential for increasing your average speed without affecting driving safety. In practical terms, what it means is that you can remain in a higher gear on downhill gradients.
EBS is an anti-locking disc-brake system that electronically controls braking effect. There are many advantages to having disc brakes with electronic control via the truck's own electrical system.

Drum brakes of Z-cam type are used primarily on trucks with leaf suspension.
